About Dr. Stephen V. Peters

Dr. Stephen V. Peters is a Leadership Shepherd, author and researcher in the education space who helps leaders learn to lead themselves first — so they have the capacity to lead others through complexity, conflict, and change in a way that enables our most valued assest, children, to thrive.

For over two decades, Dr. Stephen has led teams, schools, and organizations through turnaround and transformation — from the classroom to the principal's office to the national stage. He has directed the strategy and delivery of large-scale, graduate-level leadership development for aspiring school leaders across the country, building the systems, coaching models, and professional learning that prepare equity-centered leaders to run schools well. He has also coached leadership teams nationally through structured, data-driven improvement cycles, helping them translate bold goals into measurable results.

That experience is the foundation of Take Care & Lead, Dr. Stephen's own framework for sustainable, values-driven leadership impact. Built on two sequential disciplines — C.A.R.E. (Cultivate → Align → Resource → Execute) and L.E.A.D. (Leverage → Equip → Architect → Delegate) — the framework starts by building the relational conditions a team needs to thrive, then equips leaders with the technical discipline to execute on bold, values-driven goals. As Dr. Stephen puts it: C.A.R.E. creates the environment; L.E.A.D. deploys the skill. His companion Cognitive Capital Ladder framework helps leaders understand why growth feels harder at each stage of development, and how to move from reactive attention to the focused momentum that produces lasting change.

"While successes have marked my career, failures have provided the most profound lessons, shaping my approach to leadership and human development today. My vision is to equip people to lead and excel in their roles and strive to be better people. Society needs leaders who are not only skilled but whole—leaders who lead with integrity and empathy."

Dr. Stephen's work is also shaped by his research on Black fathers and their children's learning lives, and by his belief that Black men are extraordinary forces in the lives of young people. He is the author of The Momentum List: Rediscover Your Ability to Delight in Time, Rather Than Be Mastered by It and host of the Take Care & Live! podcast, where he brings a faith-integrated approach to leadership development to audiences nationwide.

Dr. Stephen holds a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University and a Master of Arts in Organizational Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a graduate of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania — the nation's first HBCU.

Dr. Stephen is committed to Jesus, his wife, April and family. He loves to travel and resides in eastern Pennsylvania.

The man behind the words.

When I'm not coaching leaders or in my home studio podcasting and writing, you can find me and my extraordinarily talented wife, April, traveling and building community or just binge-watching great movies and series.

Let’s Work

My Approach

Failure as Capital

Dr. Stephen collaborates with clients to:

  • Understand the origins of a persistent challenge within their leadership, team dynamic, and/or organization, their role in its development, and implement sustainable solutions to resolve and mitigate them

  • Use failure as capital for refining their leadership, improving relationships, and becoming better people who produce a positive exponential impact.

  • Develop new paradigms for building trust and community within their unique context.

  • Cultivate and implement a biblical perspective for navigating and resolving real-world challenges.

Productivity, Parenting & Potential

Dr. Stephen leverages his expertise in:

  • Education, leadership development, conflict resolution, and research to guide individuals in:

    • Reevaluating and transforming personal habits and practices that may be hindering growth, helping you align your actions with your values and aspirations for yourself and your family.

    • Empowering fathers and male caregivers to become active, influential partners in their children’s development, fostering deeper connections and creating a strong foundation for their children's academic success.

    • Strengthening communication skills between parents and children, enabling you to tap into your natural abilities to support your child's learning and growth, while also driving your own personal and professional achievement.

Know Your Leader DNA

  • The daily intentional leadership of self is essential to continued effectiveness in the leadership of others. Dr. Stephen leads from a biblical worldview centered on a bold vision, pursuing it with courage, and facilitating it with consistency and care from the kitchen table or the conference room. He equips those he coaches with tools and strategies that align with these values, helping them uncover their unique, integrity-driven approach to influence.

Resilence & Mastering Self-Leadership demands a commitment to:

    • Ongoing personal development and learning

    • Live a fully integrated life rather than attempting to live isolated personas based on how you want to be perceived rather than who you genuinely were created to be and called to be in the spaces you occupy

    • Welcoming failure as a tool to learn, teach, and develop better systems of thinking and action that enhance not only yourself but the well-being of others
